Sickles High School Varsity Football
by James Broome on Oct.21, 2011, under Sickles High School
Last night was the first opportunity I’ve had to make it out to a Sickles varsity football game. I showed up early and saw TV cameras everywhere as Bright House Networks was televising the game as well. Sadly, it wasn’t Sickles’ night. Jefferson came in fast, strong, and decidedly hungrier than the Gryphons.
I packed light for the game. My Canon 1D Mark IV and my Canon 300 f/2.8 L IS lens. Nothing else. That way, it’s harder for me to accidentally leave something behind!

Having not photographed swimming since I was still in high school, this was a shoot I was really looking forward to. I wanted to capture the swimmers in their environment, without squinty eyes and hard sunlight falling on them. I brought a large scrim and set it up near one end of the pool. I had the swimmers come over, one by one and step on a stool that brought them out of the water a bit more, and shot with a single beauty dish camera right providing the main light.
I stayed as low as possible (I was lying on the edge of the pool), but would have liked to spend more time cleaning up the background. The chairs make the image a bit more ‘vacation-y’ than I’d like. Next time, I guess.

I finally made it out to the Sickles football field for some action work. I was looking forward to seeing how good the light at their stadium was as it always seems pretty bright when driving by on Gunn.
I had to push the ISO up to 8000, but with that I was able to get 1/800 sec @ 2.8. That’s good enough to stop most action, but left feet and hands motion blurred from time to time.
You can see more of the football shots on my website.

One of my first assignments with Sickles High School was to photograph their volleyball teams in the gym. I arrived early to scout the location and figure our logistics, light placement, etc. I found a wall with the school name and logo on it and decided I’d do my best to include it as the rest of the gym was fairly vanilla.
Main light is camera left and is a beauty dish. Hair light is left of camera and slightly behind subject. Modifier is a strip box. Another light with a 30 degree honeycomb is low and to the left of the backgound keeping the logo and information from disappearing into the shadows. Now I just need to refine that pose!

Nice day of football in Lutz today as the Colts took on the Dolphins. The sky changed all day, so I was constantly adjusting my exposure and color balance, but I got lucky with great light and peak action for this shot.

I’m continuing to be impressed with the staff and families at St. Mary’s Episcopal Day School. They support their kids and sports more than just about any other school I’ve seen. It’s refreshing and you can tell the kids respond extremely well to the atmosphere.

What a great vow renewal today on the water! Jason and Tina were just perfect to work with and seriously enjoyed themselves tonight. Everyone was just having so much fun!
The portraits were taken just at sunset on a dock behind the venue. I got a real nice warm yellow from the sky and fired a speedlight from a stand just above the camera. Using a speedlight instead of a studio strobe allowed me to use a higher shutter speed and keep the sky from turning white.

This is a slightly more cropped image that will be used for the cover of the September World of Westchase magazine. The article highlights a local boy battling cystic fibrosis and was meant to feature him, but show the supporting family members as well. I received a lot of positive feedback from this image and I’m very proud of it.
Single beauty dish to camera right. The rest of the light is indirect sunlight.

Just an outstanding wedding in a unique environment. This wedding took place in Tampa’s Florida Aquarium near downtown. Mixed lighting and glass/plexi everywhere! The shiny surfaces kept me from using my own lights as they seemed to reflect or bounce off everything in there giving me less than ideal results. The surroundings were truly magical, so I pushed the ISO and did everything I could to get great images using available light.
The image above was lit by me, however. One on-camera strobe and another on a stand back and to the right.

The image above is from the most exciting finish of any game from any sport I’ve ever witnessed. This was the Boca Blast lacrosse tournament in South Florida. When the game is tied after regulation, the game goes into sudden death overtime. If the game is still tied after two overtime periods, lacrosse gets one of the coolest tie-breakers ever – the braveheart. In a braveheart, each team gets a goalie plus one player. The goalies take their places in front of their nets and the two other players face-off against each other for control of the ball. They battle, leaving everything on the field. The first player to score, wins the game.
In this game, our player lost the face-off, but our goalie stopped the shot. When the goalie went to pass the ball, our main player was dead tired, so the goalie took off with the ball, rand down the field, and scored to crazy jubilation. Greatest finish ever.
